Recognising early warning signs and making safer handling decisions.

This post is the final part of a three-part series examining cat bites in animal work. The first two posts explored why cat bites are frequently underestimated as occupational injuries and why seemingly minor wounds can sometimes result in serious complications. This final post focuses on something even more important—how to reduce the likelihood of a bite occurring in the first place.
Working with cats will always involve some degree of risk. Veterinary teams, pound and shelter staff, rescue organisations, and animal management officers all encounter situations in which frightened, injured, or highly stressed cats may respond defensively.
Rather than viewing cat bites as unpredictable events, it is helpful to understand them as the end point of a behavioural process. In many situations, cats communicate that they are becoming increasingly uncomfortable long before they resort to biting. Learning to recognise those early changes—and being willing to adapt the handling plan in response—is one of the most valuable workplace safety skills anyone working with cats can develop.
Biting is usually the end of an escalation
One reason cat bites can seem so unexpected is that cats often communicate discomfort in subtle ways. Compared with those in dogs, these behavioural changes may be quieter, shorter in duration, or easier to overlook, particularly in busy clinical or operational environments. As a result, the bite itself can appear to happen “out of nowhere.”
However, if we mentally rewind the interaction, we often find subtle behavioural changes that tell a very different story.
In many situations, biting represents the final stage of an escalating response to fear, pain, frustration or perceived threat. Long before a cat attempts to bite, they are often communicating that they are becoming uncomfortable with the situation.
Like many animals, cats generally prefer to avoid conflict where possible. They may initially show subtle increases in facial and body tension, begin displaying displacement or “fidget” behaviours such as lip licking or yawning, become increasingly vigilant, attempt to increase distance, remain very still, or try to make themselves smaller.
Only when those earlier responses are unsuccessful—or the cat perceives there is no other option—are they more likely to bite. Importantly, not all cats progress to obvious warning behaviours such as hissing, growling or swiping before they bite. This is why recognising the earlier, more subtle changes in behaviour is so important. Waiting for overt aggression may mean we’ve already missed valuable opportunities to change the outcome.
Pain can further reduce a cat’s ability to cope. A patient with an injury, painful medical condition or recent trauma may tolerate handling very differently from the same cat under normal circumstances. Likewise, cats experiencing prolonged fear or repeated stressful events may reach their coping threshold sooner than expected.
After a bite, it’s easy to press rewind and identify the subtle changes that preceded it. The challenge is developing the observational skills to recognise those same changes in real time, while there is still an opportunity to change the outcome.
Behavioural history can be one of the most valuable tools for preventing future bites. One bite incident rarely tells the whole story. Previous handling experiences often reveal the situations, procedures or interactions that consistently challenge that individual cat. Recognising those patterns allows teams to anticipate problems, adjust the handling plan and intervene before the same sequence is repeated.
Behaviour is communication
Every interaction with a cat provides information about how that animal is coping.
Changes in body posture, muscle tension, ear position, tail movement, pupil size, facial expression, vocalisation or attempts to withdraw can all indicate that a cat is becoming increasingly stressed. Some cats become very still, while others become more active and attempt to escape. Individual responses vary, but behaviour almost always provides valuable information before aggression occurs.
These behaviours should not be interpreted as a cat being stubborn, uncooperative or deliberately difficult. Instead, they represent the cat’s attempt to communicate its emotional state.
When those signals are recognised early, handlers usually have more options available. They may choose to pause, modify the environment, alter the handling technique or reconsider whether the planned procedure should continue at that time.
The earlier behavioural changes are recognised, the more opportunities there are to change the outcome.
When earlier signals are overlooked, and a cat is pushed beyond their coping threshold, the remaining options become increasingly limited. The opportunity for a cooperative, low-stress outcome may be lost, leaving the handler with two options: stop the interaction and allow the cat time to recover, or continue with greater restraint or force to complete the procedure. Wherever possible, pausing is recommended. It allows the cat to de-escalate, reduces the risk of injury during the current interaction, and helps preserve trust for future handling.
Cats learn from every handling experience. The decisions we make today don’t just influence the current interaction—they can shape how that cat responds to all types of handling in the future. When subtle attempts to communicate discomfort are repeatedly overlooked, cats may escalate more quickly in future interactions, leaving handlers with fewer opportunities to recognise and respond to earlier warning signs.
Making safer handling decisions
Reducing the risk of cat bites is about much more than restraint techniques. It begins with recognising the cat’s emotional state, understanding how the environment may be influencing behaviour, and being willing to adapt the handling plan before stress escalates.
Experienced animal professionals continually reassess situations as they unfold. Rather than viewing a handling plan as fixed, they respond to what the cat is communicating.
Before proceeding, it is worth asking:
- Is this the right time to continue?
- Does the cat need more time?
- Can the environment be modified to reduce common stress factors?
- Is there another less stressful way to achieve the same outcome?
- Would different equipment, techniques or another team member improve safety?
Sometimes the safest decision is not to continue with the original plan.
Although veterinary clinics, shelters and animal management settings look very different, the behavioural principles are remarkably similar.
Veterinary practice
Reducing stress may involve allowing the cat the choice to remain in their carrier while obtaining a history, minimising unnecessary handling, changing the order of procedures or how many need to be actioned today, or deciding that anti-anxiety medication or sedation is the safest and most welfare-friendly pathway. Fear Free®, Stress Free or Low Stress Handling principles all recognise that reducing fear improves both patient welfare and staff safety.
Shelters and rescue organisations
Reducing risk may involve allowing a newly admitted cat time to settle before handling or transferring to an enclosure; keeping the cat’s carrier off the ground and covered at all times to prevent exposure to unfamiliar people or dogs; providing appropriate hiding opportunities; and using hands-free transfer techniques where appropriate.
Animal management officers and rangers
Safer decisions may include reassessing whether direct handling is necessary at all, allowing a frightened cat to remain safely confined and covered in a trap until an appropriate enclosed transfer opportunity becomes available, and using safe hands-free microchip scanning and cage-to-cage transfer techniques.
The decisions available will vary depending on the setting. In veterinary practice, this may mean modifying the original plan to better meet the cat’s behavioural and medical needs. In animal management, it may mean recognising when a well-established hands-free handling procedure is the safest option and consistently following it. In every setting, good decisions are guided by an understanding of behaviour, sound risk assessment and the safety of both people and cats.
One of the biggest differences I notice in experienced handlers isn’t that they’re better at restraining cats—it’s that they’re better at making decisions. They recognise when to pause, when to change their approach and when to continue with a well-planned handling strategy.
Good communication improves safety
Reducing the risk of cat bites is rarely the responsibility of one individual.
Sharing behavioural observations before handling begins allows everyone involved to understand the plan and anticipate potential challenges before they become problems.
Whether it’s documenting a patient’s previous handling history, discussing behavioural observations during shelter shift handovers or communicating capture plans before field work begins, good communication helps teams make better decisions.
Equally important is creating a workplace culture in which responding appropriately to a cat’s behaviour is recognised as good judgement rather than as an inconvenience or a failure.
Understanding behaviour protects both people and cats
Improving workplace safety is not achieved solely through better equipment or restraint techniques. It also depends on understanding why animals behave as they do.
Research by Johnson and Fritschi (2024) identified knowledge of animal behaviour as one of several important measures associated with reducing workplace injuries in the veterinary profession.
While every workplace presents different challenges, the underlying principle is remarkably consistent. Recognising fear, pain and escalating stress allows handlers to make better decisions before situations deteriorate.
Importantly, the same decisions that improve human safety often improve animal welfare. Reducing fear, avoiding unnecessary force, and working within a cat’s coping capacity benefit both the people handling the animal and the animal itself.
Protecting staff and protecting animal welfare are not competing priorities. In many situations, they are achieved through exactly the same approach.
Throughout this series, we’ve explored why cat bites deserve greater recognition as occupational injuries, why they can become far more serious than they initially appear, and how understanding behaviour can reduce the likelihood of bites occurring in the first place.
Although no handling approach can eliminate risk entirely, recognising behavioural change, adapting the plan, and responding before a cat reaches their behavioural limit remain among the most effective ways to improve safety—for both people and cats.
Perhaps the most effective way to prevent a cat bite isn’t learning to respond faster once a cat becomes aggressive—it’s learning to recognise the moment when a change in approach means aggression is no longer necessary.
